Giant Squid Studios is developing a new game called Sword of the Sea, where players can surf across vast desert dunes on a thin blade. The game allows players to slice through glittering sands and scale ancient towers.
Gameplay Mechanics
Players control their character by pushing an analog stick in different directions. The character moves in the direction they push and stops immediately when they let go. This freedom to move without waypoints or control prompts enables players to rely on environmental clues to guide them through puzzles and challenges.
Key Abilities
The game features various abilities essential for navigating its world, including:
- Jumping
- Grinding on chains
- Using a hover ability in certain areas
- Performing tricks with quick inputs
Soundtrack and Inspiration
Austin Wintory is composing the soundtrack for Sword of the Sea. Giant Squid Studios’ founder, Matt Nava, drew inspiration from his experiences playing Journey and his love for surfing while developing the game.
Nava’s passion for surfing translates into an immersive experience where players can feel like they are riding waves across desert dunes. He expressed, "I wanted to capture that feeling," highlighting how surfing influenced the game’s creation.
Release Information
Sword of the Sea is set to release later this year on PC via Steam Early Access, with a full release planned for a later date. The collaboration with Austin Wintory aims to bring this unique experience to life with an engaging soundtrack that complements its gameplay mechanics.
