The New Word Game: Connections

The New Word Game: Connections

The New York Times has introduced a new word game called Connections, designed to challenge players’ creative thinking skills. The game was created by associate puzzle editor Wyna Liu and is now available in The Times’ Games section.

How to Play

In Connections, players are presented with four words that must be grouped together based on a common thread. This thread can be anything from:

  • Book titles
  • Software names
  • Country names

Each grouping requires players to think outside the box and make connections between seemingly unrelated things.

Accessing the Game

Players can access the game through their web browsers or mobile devices via The New York Times website or app. They have up to four chances to get all four words in a set correct before the game ends.

Game Features

  • Rearrangement and Shuffling: Users can rearrange and shuffle the board as needed, making it easier to find connections between words.
  • Color-Coded Groups:
    • Yellow: Easy categories
    • Green: Medium-difficulty categories
    • Blue: Difficult categories
    • Purple: Extremely difficult categories

When a player successfully groups all four words correctly within their allotted attempts—without making any mistakes—those words are removed from the board for good.

Additional Challenges

Players who want more challenges can also try Connections Extra, which offers additional sets with more complex themes than those found in regular Connections games.
