The Quest for the Cup: Morgan Rielly's Perspective

Morgan Rielly has been playing in the NHL for 12 years, and he’s never seen a Canadian team win the Stanley Cup. He was just a kid when the Montreal Canadiens last hoisted it in 1993.

The Desire to Win

"It would be special," Rielly said before Game 5 against Florida. "We want to be those guys. We’ve worked hard enough throughout our careers that we feel like we’re deserving of it."

The Toronto Maple Leafs are currently tied with Florida at two games apiece in their playoff series, maintaining home-ice advantage for Game 5 and potentially two more games if necessary.

A Strong Canadian Connection

Rielly is one of several Canadian players on Toronto’s roster, including:

  • Auston Matthews
  • Mitch Marner
  • John Tavares

The Leafs have a strong connection to hockey fans across Canada, who tune into their games regularly.

"We hear pucks bouncing off outdoor rinks while walking your dogs during winter months," Rielly noted. "It doesn’t take much for Canadians to connect with hockey."

Growing Up with a Dream

Rielly grew up playing minor hockey in West Vancouver, B.C., where he competed against kids from all over Canada who were also aspiring to represent Team Canada at various levels of competition.

"We all had that same dream growing up," he reflected. "We all wanted to play in the NHL one day."

Making History

Now that they’re in the league, Rielly believes they can make history by becoming the first Canadian team to win the Cup since Montreal won back-to-back titles from 1986-87 under coach Michel Bergeron.

"It would mean everything," Rielly said about winning as part of a Canadian team. "It would be an incredible feeling knowing you’re part of something bigger than yourself."
