Town Hall Meeting in Fort Macleod to Address Coal Industry Concerns

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, along with three United Conservative Party cabinet ministers, will host a town hall meeting in Fort Macleod to engage with Albertans and address concerns regarding the coal industry and government policies.

Event Details

  • Date: Wednesday
  • Time: 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
  • Location: Fort Macleod and District Community Hall
  • Duration: 2 hours

Attendees

Joining Premier Smith will be:

  • Energy Minister Brian Jean
  • Agriculture Minister RJ Sigurdson
  • Environment Minister Rebecca Schulz
  • Livingstone-Macleod MLA Chelsae Petrovic

Community Concerns

Petrovic has faced criticism for organizing the town hall months after a request was made for such an event with elected officials.

Resident Feedback

Claresholm resident Jacqueline Chalmers expressed her concerns, stating:

  • "It feels like they’re kind of a day late."
  • She attended a recent meeting in Claresholm where she questioned the absence of scientists to provide data on the potential environmental impacts of coal mining activities in southern Alberta’s waterways.

Chalmers emphasized the importance of having experts present:

  • "I want them (scientists) there because I think they can provide some really good information that we don’t know."
  • She believes their presence would be beneficial for informed discussions.

Inquiry to Smith’s Office

Smith’s office has not responded to inquiries regarding the attendance of scientists at the town hall meeting or whether other community members have requested speaking opportunities.
