Tragic Bus Crash Claims Life of 2-Year-Old Boy

A tragic incident occurred on May 28, when a 2-year-old boy was killed in a bus crash at a Horseshoe Bay bus stop, leaving his mother fighting for her life. The crash took place around 3:30 p.m. outside the BC Ferries foot passenger ticket booth.

Incident Details

  • Witnesses reported that a TransLink bus jumped the curb and struck several people at the scene.
  • The driver of the bus has been taken into custody by police.

Family Background

The child’s father, Cilneu Machado, described his son, Leonardo, as "our one per cent miracle baby." Born in 2021, Leonardo brought immense joy to his family after his mother, Silvana de Oliveira Schramm, moved to Canada from Brazil in 2014.

Mother’s Condition

  • Schramm remains hospitalized with extensive injuries from her waist down and is currently sedated as she receives medical treatment.
  • A GoFundMe campaign has been organized by Theresa Morrison at AJ’s Brooklyn Pizza Joint, where Machado works.

Morrison has been in close contact with the family since the news of their tragic loss broke. She shared that Schramm had always wanted to become a mother but faced challenges due to health issues related to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Journey to Parenthood

After moving to Canada, Schramm and her husband, Cilneu Machado, began IVF treatments, which ultimately led to Leonardo’s conception through surrogacy in Brazil. Despite facing complications during pregnancy, including high blood pressure and gestational diabetes, Schramm successfully gave birth via cesarean section on April 14, 2022.

Leonardo’s arrival brought immense joy and love into their lives; however, this senseless tragedy has left them heartbroken once again.
