Trump Announces Intent to End Digital Equity Act

President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he intends to end the Digital Equity Act, a federal grant program aimed at bridging the digital divide and ensuring equal access to information technologies for all Americans.

Background of the Digital Equity Act

  • The act was approved by Congress in 2021 as part of a $65 billion investment to bring internet access to every home and business in the United States.
  • It allocated $2.75 billion for grants, with the following distribution:
    • Over half of the funds were directed towards broadband infrastructure projects, such as:
      • Laying down fiber-optic cables
      • Upgrading existing networks
    • Another third was dedicated to programs addressing digital equity issues, including:
      • Affordability
      • Accessibility
      • Adoption rates
      • Usage rates
      • Quality of service standards for fixed broadband services
    • The remaining funds were set aside for training programs to help people learn how to use technology effectively.

Recent Allocations

In March of last year, $811 million was allocated by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) for states and tribes under Title II of Section 6050(a)(6). This allocation focuses on broadband deployment efforts.

Understanding Digital Equity

‘Digital equity’ refers broadly to ensuring everyone has equal opportunities when using information technologies, regardless of their background or socioeconomic status.
