Trump Instructs DOE to Reassess Appliance Efficiency Regulations

President Donald Trump signed a presidential memorandum instructing the Department of Energy (DOE) to reassess regulations for water and energy efficiency in household appliances. This includes:

  • Dishwashers
  • Washing machines
  • Showers
  • Faucets
  • Toilets
  • Urinals

Context of the Decision

This move is part of a broader effort to reorganize the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which was announced earlier this week. As part of this reorganization, the EPA plans to eliminate the Energy Star program, which certifies products for energy efficiency with a recognizable blue label.

Implications of the Regulations

The regulations in question are designed to protect consumers from purchasing inefficient products that can lead to higher utility bills. Andrew deLaski, executive director of the Appliance Standards Awareness Project, stated:

"Congress enacted these laws; it’s not up to one person who happens to be president right now."

Critics argue that weakening these regulations would undermine consumer protections and allow companies to sell less efficient products under the guise of increased choice. The DOE will now consider rescinding or weakening current standards for water use in household appliances.

DeLaski expressed concern, saying:

"We’re going back 30 years. We’re going back before Congress made any changes."

Trump’s Environmental Policy Stance

Trump has been critical of environmental policies across various government agencies during his presidency. Notably, in 2019, he rolled back Obama-era fuel efficiency standards for cars and light trucks after being sued by several states over his plan.

Additionally, Trump has taken steps against climate change efforts both domestically and internationally. This includes executive orders targeting California’s clean car rules, requiring federal review before any state can set its own emissions standards.

Congressional Response

Trump’s memo also calls on Congress to not only repeal existing regulations but also to prevent future administrations from reinstating those rules without congressional approval. Democrats have vowed to reinstate these regulations if they gain control in the upcoming elections.

Rep. Jared Huffman (D-Calif.), chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee subcommittee on Oversight & Investigations, commented:

"This is just another example where President Trump is trying everything he can do through executive action because he knows he won’t be able to pass anything through Congress."
