Twix Advert Banned for Encouraging Unsafe Driving

A TV advert for the chocolate bar Twix has been banned by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) after five complaints were received, stating that it encourages unsafe driving.

Advert Details

The advert features a dramatic car chase and crash, resulting in two identical cars—one of which is caramel-colored like a Twix—being sandwiched on top of each other.

Clearcast’s Defense

Clearcast, the organization responsible for approving adverts before they are broadcast, argued that the scene was set in "a world that was absurd, fantastical and removed from reality."

Mars-Wrigley’s Position

However, Mars-Wrigley disagreed with this assessment. Clearcast stated that "this setting did not exempt the ad from rules around advertising."

ASA’s Ruling

The ASA ruled against the advert, stating that it condones unsafe driving. While they acknowledged that some viewers might interpret the fast-paced action sequences as part of stunt work rather than real-life scenarios, they deemed this distinction insufficient to justify airing the ad.

As a result of this decision, the banned ad will not appear on television again.
